Hockey Hobby Confessions - atolentino1 - 04-08-2009 07:56 AM

Everybody has a secret or two (or two hundred) stowed away somewhere. Luckily, most of us don’t need walk-in closets for our skeletons, but there are bound to be a few climate-controlled spaces hiding hush-hush hobby evidence.

Whether you paid an embarrassingly exorbitant price for an average card or you’ve illegally scaled an electrified fence to get an autograph from your favorite athlete, this is your chance to share your secret.

Depending on how revealing you’d like to be and how much of a “talkin’ to” you’re willing to endure, you might want to keep your responses anonymous on the <a href =http://www.blogbeckett.wordpress.com" target="_blank">blog</a>. However, if you’re willing to fess up to your collecting confession, feel free to shout it from the mountaintops here, there and everywhere.

We don’t have much experience in Hollywood style grilling and we frankly aren’t fond of rub burns, but here are a few questions to get the ball rolling:

<B>-What big items have you bought that were funded by selling your cards? How much did you sell? Have you tried to collect those cards again?

-What is the most amount of money you have ever thrown down on a single card? What was the card? Do you still have it?

-How often do you bid on online sports card auctions while working?

-What is the most money you've ever spent on a single <a href =http://www.beckettmarketplace.com" target="_blank">Beckett Marketplace</a> purchase?

-What is the most you’ve ever spent on your card hobby in one month?

-What is the craziest thing you’ve done to get a player’s autograph?</B>

Since this is an open forum, feel free to chime in with secrets and inquiries of your own.

The most amount of money I have ever thrown down on a single card was $125.00 for an Arturs Irbe 2002-03 BTP Emblems #/10. I still have it.

Since I go to university, I do not have too much toss away income, so the most I've spent in a month was $450.00 on cards.

As for my evil hockey hobby confession:
The less valuable cards I collect are placed in binders in ultrapro nine-pocket sleeves. I turn them into 18 pocket sleeves by putting the cards back-to-back, so instead of fifty 3 inch binders, I only have 25. The cards are still in great shape, with no wear or tear on either side. Some people claim it is dangerous for the card, but I find no evidence of it.

Hmm.. why do my answers keep dissappearing.. this thread sucks... (good topic though)

- I sold a set of 95-96 Coll. Choice Platinums to buy a N64... regretted it ever since. I did put that set back together... it took a while, though

- I've spent around $100 on lots of cards: 96-97 BD Run for the Cups, 11-12 C55 Art Ross, 02-03 ITG Zetterberg RCs, 60-61 Topps Bobby Hull... and yes, I still have every single one
The most I've spent on a single card was $800 on a OPC Premier Gretzky/Howe/Orr Auto. Stupid buy that I couldn't afford, so I flipped it in less than a week for $750. A $50 loss for nothing.

Most I've spent on a card I still own (and will probably always own), $120 for this:

Most I've spent in a month: $1,100 (the month with the Trio auto)

Like IrbeFan I used to double up my pages. That was before I moved on to boxes. Even worse though was as a kid I used to flip my cards into a hat. Now some my older stuff has worn corners or is just bent.
Oh...and I used to throw doubles or old junky stuff (ProSet et al.) on the fire (Not much, just enough to get the fire going).
