Suggestions for Panini Basketball... - njdevils420 - 03-06-2009 04:07 PM First off...i have never gotten into basketball cards...but i will just speak on cards in general.

It was only very recently that my interest in trading cards was re-ignited. My 'peak' years of collecting was in early-to-mid 90's..mostly baseball, more hockey towards the end. More interested in hockey these days.... but when collecting in the mid 90s.... you would have your half dozen or so standard manufacturers (topps, upper deck, fleer, etc). Then, of course, you had your insert cards..maybe a couple per manufacturer.

What resparked my interest in collecting was digging up all my old cards...i wanted to know current values, so i went out and picked up current beckett magazines. I was absolutely BLOWN AWAY at the number of insert sets and the like. It is absolutely ridiculous!!!!

Now, i am sure this is nothing new..but to someone who hasn't kept up with things in nearly 15 years...is a huge change from those times. How many insert sets does one manufacturer need? Take 2008 Topps Baseball for example...no less than 50 different sets and such.

the 'regular' topps set has 36 insert sets!!! not including the various colored plates. then you have topps update with its 24 different inserts. then topps allen and ginter....28 inserts. next up..topps chrome... this 'only' has 11 insert sets. Topps co-signers and its 18 inserts come right before Topps Heritage and its 26 insert sets. Next is Moments and Milestones...11 different inserts. Opening day... only 4 inserts. and last but not least, Topps Triple Threads with its 30 inserts.

That is a total of NINE different topps sets with a combined 188 different sets of inserts. 188!! That is beyond ridiculous.

Suggestions for Panini Basketball... - 7whodey - 03-06-2009 04:48 PM I think that maybe everyone is missing the obvious here. The simple fact that Panini is asking for our opinions tells me that they do not "have their finger on the pulse of the collector". How in the world did this company get the exclusive contract over Upper Deck and Topps? I am a free market and competition believer. With competition, you get a better product at a better price. Look at cell phone companies. There is major competition and every day it seems that the companies are offering more services at better prices. This is a major mistake by the NBA. Look at what baseball did. They booted Donruss and I believe the card offerings have suffered. Let the consumer decide what they want to spend their money on. What incentive will Panini have to offer better products? With no competition, there is no incentive. Suggestions for Panini Basketball... - paradogs - 03-06-2009 06:18 PM These are some thoughts on Panini SOCCER:

1) Include real Jerseys and ON CARD! Autographs in your card products.
2) No redemptions
3) Make such a Premium Set available worldwide and not just in local markets. I live in Germany and do not understand why only release the Trading Card Game Version of Euro 2008 and Champions Leauge 2008-09 and not the very beautiful Main Card Sets, which only can be found in a few countries.
4) Decrease Sticker releases and make Card Set more attractive with well designed special Inserts like you started with the Ultras in Euro 2008 and this Champions League. Would love to see Auto or Game used Shirts as Inserts, other good Inserts would increase Interest too.
5) Speaking for germany: better promotion, free specials like Promos for good customers (since updates happen quite often, why don`t you creat a "Collectors Club" were you send the people Information on products and some Updates and Promos?), better distribution of all your product range. I would love to order single Stickers nearly from every Soccer releases you had, but I am limited only to a few collections.

Thanks for asking!
Suggestions for Panini Basketball... - jetsfan112 - 03-06-2009 06:55 PM i don't like what panini is doing. why have 1 manufacturer of NBA basketball cards? Each company specializes in 1 thing. Like sp authentic. Suggestions for Panini Basketball... - Puterop - 03-06-2009 07:44 PM If you "Don't care about the NBA", why respond? This is for people to give ideas to Panini and see if they follow through.

I would like to see them make it quicker to get replacement cards (and redemptions if they must include them). UD was supposedly going to make it better but I still have to wait several months to over a year for redemptions. If possible, don't include redemptions. Try to send replacement cards (for damaged cards) within at least a month.

As far as parallel cards, don't make several parallel cards that don't look any different than the base card. I have seen autograph cards in some products that have no visible difference from the base card but it is numbered. Then they have another one that is identical but numbered lower. Make the card different in some way (besides lower numbering).

In the higher end products (especially over $100 a pack) try not to include any scrubs. The memorabila/autograph cards should be rookies, Super stars, and stars (including unlisted stars). It sucks to open a high dollar pack and the "hit" card is a player that waves a towel from the bench or is no longer in the league and no one has heard of.

If a memorabilia card is numbered to 25 or less, don't put a white piece of jersey on it. Those cards should have at least a 2 color patch or something like it.

Thanks for reading.

Ken (puterop) Suggestions for Panini Basketball... - harleysdad100 - 03-06-2009 08:45 PM We, as collectors, have been kicked around and abused by UPPER DECK and TOPPS. I remember when pulling an autograph (on card) or a jersey was a REALLY BIG think. Parallels and insert sets were not so prolifick. Set builders were busy because rookies were not issued in three levels each level less than the one before it. Products were not of the same name with a few extra letters after it (SPA, SPX, SP Rookie, SP Rookie Threads, SP Game Used, etc.) and the cards look almost the same except higher priced than the one before with less cards. AND God forbid you pull the DEATH DEFYING Redemption card. They take forever to get IF you do get it.

To produce a better product. Cut out TOPPS, UPPER DECK and DONRUSS/PLAYOFF. Buy each of their products. See how they look. Count the number of insert sets and parallel sets they make. Check out the size of their supposed game used pieces. NOW, only put in one or two relevant insert and parallel sets with players the collectors would be proud to own or trade for. If putting in jersey or such game used stuff into the product, make it a size befitting the price of the product. DO NOT USE ANY REDEMPTIONS.

This is my simple wish for a product whether it be NBA, MLB, NFL or NHL. Especially if we can get rid of UPPER DECK, TOPPS and DONRUSS/PLAYOFF.

Thanks for the chance to rant.

HarleysDad Suggestions for Panini Basketball... - jmys55 - 03-06-2009 09:21 PM SPECIAL REDEMPTION CARDS! HEAR ME OUT!!!

All the ideas some good or standard. But I believe Panini has a chance to make a new innovative product never done before with "MEET THE PLAYER" Redemption cards which will truly bring collectors close to the game. For example, issue a "MEET THE PLAYER" redemption card in 2009-10 packs which is good for the following in the 2010-11 season:

1) Flight, Hotel Stay residing in player's home town team
2) Pre-Game meet and shoot-around with the player
3) Court side seat
4) Game-jersey from the game given to person
5) Along with a 1/1 autographed card presented after the game

Issuing the cards in one season will allow people to pull them and sell them to collectors on eBay or Beckett and have all their dreams come-true. Nothing can bring you closer to a collectors dream!

Let me know what you guys think.
Suggestions for Panini Basketball... - jmys55 - 03-06-2009 09:22 PM SPECIAL REDEMPTION CARDS!
