Trying to get some base to get signed at training camp from this past season. Any recommendations on a set that will take ink well?

Good ol' OPC is the way to go for on card autos - the regular "cardboard paper" looking ones though, not OPC Platinum, though if you rub the coating of those enough, the auto will "stick" too.
