How did your PC develop and evolve? - jephthah1 - 03-28-2015

jermey7269 has a great thread going right now, taking a look at cards from one's early days of collecting. This got me to wondering...how has your PC transitioned and developed over the years? Did you start as a set builder, move to teams, and then to individuals? Do you collect randomly? Did you start in one sport and transition to another? How did your PC become what it is today?

Started as set builder football only, still a set builder but some baseball as well. At one time I had over 3000 different Jerry Rice cards but stopped when over half where stolen. This included most of the high valued ones of course!

I started in baseball and my little brother started in football about 2 years later. He sold me his collection back in '92 then in '97 I started heavy in football and basketball. I think it was 2007 or 2008 I traded and gave away all my basketball then 2010 my wife demanded me to do one sport since then I have been slowly trading my football off but she told me to keep my Cowboys and that started in 2010. I still have approx 11,000 football to trade.

I dabbled a little in vintage and prewar era cards but once I bought a huge collection I learned alot for most of the cards were from 1909-2003 some were complete sets some partial sets most memorable is I got 2 1986 topps complete sets I sold one and kept the 2nd for myself. I have been contemplating on getting the Rice Rookie graded. The collection also had 1983 fleer, 1984 fleer, 2000 pacific update which included the Johan Santana rc, and many approx 400 different Nolan Ryans with a bunch of oddball stuff.

I am mainly a baseball collector now but will trade for Cowboys and HOF Rookies.

I started with no goals or aims but I loved getting cards of my local teams (Chicago Cubs, Bears, Bulls) or my favorite Tecmo Super Bowl team (49ers, shocker I know). I had always done some football collecting along the way but was big into baseball until the 94 strike, then I moved to basketball until the lockout of 98-99 when I switched back to baseball briefly until it was football all the way.

I took a break from the hobby when I was in college and when I returned a year after I was done, I decided to focus just on set building. I tried a little player collecting with Peerless Price but he was retired at that point and not as much fun. When the Bears drafted Alshon Jeffery I was on board with that PC and haven't looked back. I don't look for 49ers anymore but I'll use Bears guys as fillers for trades.

Good thread, I started in 1989 buying a couple packs looking for Cleveland Browns. This turned into building Browns Team Sets which turned into building complete sets, which turned into buying lots of wax and teaming up with a buddy doing weekend shows. There were shows every weekend in early 90s here.

It was doing the shows at that time and selling wax that had all the inserts which was the craze back then that turned me off finally. Little kids would buy a wax pack at my table open it there and if there wasn't an insert they wanted just leave the cards laying there. There was no real collecting or interest in players, everyone was going to get rich on trading cards.

I ended up giving 1000s of cards away at children's centers and hospitals and selling them on ebay for pennies on the dollar for what I paid. My original interest was FB so I got rid of all cards from the other sports I had. Years later when grading became popular I sent in some of my PC cards to see what happened and got semi-hooked again. It was at this time that I learned some valuable lessons on buying cards on ebay....everyone is selling "mint" cards....yeah right!

Now, I collect HOFers mostly QBs, RBs, WRs, and TEs and try to buy them graded already. Since I had a 1958 Jim Brown RC from the old days I had it graded and decided to try and build a 1958 graded set with minimum grade of BVG 7 NM. I knew this would be a long process and it has been but it's fun to try and do. My PC is now just a couple hundred graded cards. I have a wall case I bought from a member here that holds the top 30 all time rushing leader's RCs. I try to find their top true RC and slowly try to upgrade them....

That's my story and I'm sticking to it

Started as a set builder and hit seeker in 2009. After 3k wasted on about $100 worth of cards I started super collecting one player (Hartline). So now I spend money on what want and will never waste money on boxes and sets again.

Great thread!

I started out at about 9yrs old, when me and a couple friends discovered the $10 mixed card boxes at Kmart and Shopko...would save my allowance to buy one when I could lol. We used to trade every time we visited. At that point, it was pretty much any Packer player. Lost interest in it for a long time after that, mostly due to just not having anyone else around who liked it.

About 3 years ago, I needed some money, so I decided to try and sell cards on the auction site. While in the process of building a small inventory of singles to sell, I got bit by the collecting bug again. Initially started out to super collect guys, but then realized just how difficult that is in todays world of thousands of cards per year. I've been all over the place with my collections, and continue to narrow it down, though I still have a long ways to go lol. Mostly focusing on Rainbows, Vontaze Burfict, Franklin 1/1s, and Abbrederis now.

This led to a few different projects. Sets, I am putting together the base Valor of this year, and thinking of doing Fire as well. I've started Certified Fabric of the Game Team Die -Cuts from 2011 through 2013. I am trying to build a SB MVP collection, by buying the best card I can from the year the player won it, and getting them graded. Another project, autos of my top 7 favorite players at each position, and some of my favorite Packers. Also, want to start a cracked ice collection of my favorite RBs, LBs, and Safeties.

I only open a box or two twice a year, just for the fun of having something to open. Trying to move a lot of my stuff now, and narrow it down to just stuff I want. This site has been awesome meeting new friends, and the help many of you here have given me! It's been a fun experience!

Great stories everybody! I love the variety...reasons all over the map for getting into the hobby. And I know change is inevitable. My PC has morphed so many times over the years, and am still adding to and taking away from my collection...changing it up all the time. But I guess that's part of the fun, isn't it?

Keep the stories coming!!

Started as a single player collector with my best friend back in the day. As baseball cards were sort of fading and basketball was Jordan or nothing kind of thing, yet we switched right when Penny & Shaq were getting hot! Just to give you a little timeline! :p
I think I started heavy with Eddie George, as I liked him in college and was all in when he was in the pros. My friend chose Keyshawn Johnson and it was sort of an unwritten rule that if one person hit the other guys favorite player you had to give it to him! Needless to say we never really hit any of the guys we collected. So each year we tried this, 97' was Warrick Dunn & Corey Dillion. I think later in 97' is when i was sorta off and on, trying to stick to a player every year until 2005 when I picked it up heavily again. I think my friend stopped collecting all together in 97' or switched back to basketball, i don't know really. :p
My friend had the craziest luck though! Being in a small town we really didn't have a LCS & so we went to our local grocery store (Dillions). I remember him hitting these 2 out of 2 packs! I know they aren't much now but back then, it was CRAZY especially from retail!

I do remember a guy trying to be somewhat of a card shop out of his house around that time which is where I got this, & still have it today! Big Grin

For me though I kept collecting, I had players picked out yet wasn't really in it heavily and didn't pick many up, if any at all with no LCS around. Players I follow/collected:
98' - Charles Woodson
99' - Ricky Williams (I think everyone was)
00' - Peter Warrick
01' - Michael Vick (As everyone else)
02' - Jeremy Shockey (Pretty much stopped me from collecting as I was waiting on a redemption card he never signed, ended up getting a lineman auto in return! Thanks UD)
03' - Larry Johnson (A KC fan but it was hard to pick any up)
04' - I don't remember having anyone yet I was in the military out to sea by this time. I do remember the draft though and when Steven Jackson got picked I was like, WHO? :p
05' - Cadillac Williams, Ronnie Brown & Maurice Clarett
I remember just getting back into it about this time & didn't know which was which with them Auburn boys & so I went for both. lol :p

I think in 01' or 02' is when I started to dabble with rivals.com aka scout.com. This is where i was hooked! Watching kids get scouted and then the hype of committing to a college, going off to college & then eventually going to the pros! Exciting times!
Many, many, many people I've watched go thru the "ranks", and most of those which your average fan has never even heard of! lol Tongue
Darrell Scott was suppose to be the next big thing!Sad

I "claimed" a few others you may have heard of from HS!

With this site and the addition of watching college football brought on a little game between the fellas & I. Naming draft classes, certain players colleges and all kinds of rare but pointless info we would recite off the top of our heads to stump each other! :p

Anyways i'm far off topic now, Tongue. I'm still a single player collector & each year I "claim" someone still but only get a few of their RCs. The latest!

RE: How did your PC develop and evolve? - bojesphob - 04-01-2015

Well, I started off with 1988 Topps, I think. Just collected about anything at the time. When I was in high school, after following the Pack for several years, I traded a HUGE box of commons and such to a kid at school whose dad owned a card shop for a BUNCH of Packers stuff. That really catapulted my collection at the time, going from around 40-50 Packers cards to around 4-500, including several Favre rookies that I didn't have to begin with. Then, over the years kept getting Packers stuff and buying packs and such. Then eBay came along, and I found that people sold football cards on it. So, that really helped my collection grow (and still does). I mostly focused on Favre, but I still have a LOT of other guys over the years. 2005 came along and I actually got quite a few Rodgers rookies (though didn't get an auto until about 2 years later). Then, once I started trading on here and getting into group breaks, I realized I was able to get some Jordy Nelson partial rainbows pretty quick.... And as I got those, I found I could start other ones, and as I completed more, I started more. Now I have several, and a few in progress Smile Still collect Favre, Rodgers and everybody else, but now just mostly focused on Favre and Nelson when I have the choice.
