Mike Peca 1997/1998 Be A Player Gold Printing Yet Unsigned - arena_guy - 04-06-2012

Hello. I have been away from the hobby for awhile and have recently taken a look at it again. I would buy cards here and there with allowance money as a youth. When I was finally of working age and got my first job, I would spend most of my paycheck on sports cards. My favorite product being Be A Player. A signature in every pack? Sign me up! (I also liked what In The Game did with BAP when they had the license.) The year I bought the most of was the 1997/1998 series. It still surprises me that I can find a box of this stuff for about $35 on eBay.

Anyway, I have had this Mike Peca card in my collection since I pulled it out of a box in the late '90s. It's an interesting card, for sure. The card has the gold printing that is supposed to mark it as a signature card. The common cards without a signature are printed in silver. This card should have received a signature but didn't. How it got into a box I have no idea. To the best of my knowledge, this is not a common occurrence with this product and I never came across another one myself.

Comments? Thoughts?

Could be a run of the mill error card.

It was a promotional sample sent to the player never meant to be returned to BAP or inserted in the packs.

Thank you for your response. There is nothing on the card to indicate that it is a promotional sample. It is exactly the same as the other signed cards, except for the the missing signature. I am not sure what the print run of the signature set is, but each card had to be hand-signed. How would one know whether the card did or didn't get to Peca? Did BAP do strict accounting of how many cards each player returned? Or maybe the card got mixed in the production process, so it slipped through that way and it never made it to Peca.

Ok, so I checked eBay for "97/98 Be A Player Promo" and as of this writing there is a Felix Potvin promo listed (item #360078703452). The printing is in silver and the word "promo" is on the back. On my card, the word "promo" isn't there. If they sent players both silver and gold versions, wouldn't they both have promo written on the back?

It is not a promo like sent out to dealers. It says "copy of original" across the picture which is what was sent out to players.

Oh. "Copy of original" is my addition to the photo. The rest is the actual card and is unaltered. Sorry for any confusion.

I pulled a Bobby Dollas card out of 98-99 BAP Signatures that is not autographed and states on the back, congratulations for pulling a certified auto. It happens.

That makes more sense I have about 10 of the golds that should have been Auto's but are not.
