patches, cut-outs - folkertino - 09-23-2011

Alright, here's my small rant on these cut-out cards with patches underneath. What is up with that? I have seen this in a couple of sets now and it really doesn't add up to me.

Pieces of a (logo, name, number) patch are arguably the nicest added feature to a trading card. Even a huge swatch is nice. Why would you cover it for it to spell out the player's name or number? I would personally much more prefer for the patch to be completely exposed.

Am I the only one upset about this? Honestly, it makes me wanna cut open those cards. Here's a few examples:

I agree that I would like them to breathe (as someone put in another thread) but at the same time, it still looks rather cool. lol.

I agree the Fabrics of the Game in Certified did the same thing...IKRS ME OFF

RE: patches, cut-outs - gjpoll1 - 09-23-2011

I'm fine with it, sometimes we have to accept change, otherwise everything would be the same and the hobby might become stale.

RE: patches, cut-outs - jpleazme805 - 09-23-2011

I do not like them very much! I try to pass them up when searching for the next card I want.. I was excited when I pulled my kobe national treasures 24/99. It was the first card I seen when opening up my first pack of the stuff. I was excited because of the jersey name cutout.. not that it was serial /24, which I didn't even look at until I got home from my LCS. I was unhappy when I seen the card only sale for a few bucks.. hopefully, I can get some good change selling mine, since it is serialized to his jersey number... now, the big question is... do I sell now or wait until the season starts.. when ever that will be...

the only jersey/patch cut outs that I do like are the jumbo jersey numbers... but why doesn't Panini use the same idea in each of their products? Each product is supposed to have their own designs, technology, and eye catching appearance... like what Topps & UD did.. (i.e. exquisite, ud black, chronology, SPX, SPA, finest (refracters), topps chrome, hardcourt, ect).... we didn't see chrome or refracters in black, exq, or SPX... so why do we see the same jersey/patch designs in every Panini product? I am happy that the different products are starting to look different, instead of all the same like in the first year. I didn't buy too much this year, since I was deployed to South America, but am trying to catch up on the hobby..

i dont like it. its ok in one or two products for regular jersey cards, but please dont cover up beautiful patches.

RE: patches, cut-outs - jay187 - 09-23-2011

god i hate the future cards what ever happend too the good o fashing kind of cards these's days

RE: patches, cut-outs - nickm1123 - 09-23-2011

I agree as well. I think that the patch should be completly exposed to see the colors and breaks. As far as regular swatches (like the Kobe card from Jpleazme), I like that idea. I thought it was cool that they spelled the names out. Since the swatches are all one color, that did not bother me that it was partially covered up as I am not missing anything. With the patches, I think they shouldnt be covered up.

Nope, you're definitely not the only one! This design of name/team name plate jersey/patch cards comes off very cheap and boring to me. Why oh why would we want to cover up beautiful patches? And if you're going to cover it up, at least make some nice designs. Who's brilliant idea was this? And no, it's not in a couple products per say, it's in several! Just like those manufactured team logo patch autos are! It gets tedious so quick because of this. I hate the design, it spells lazy to me. I don't even pay them attention on eBay.

In Topps Triple Threads they may have covered the patches but they designed the card so beautifully that it blended in well, at least IMO. See this Dwight Howard patch below:
They spelled out 'orlando magic' in little cutout letters. The middle patch has little magic stars to reveal a patch underneath.

and another Topps Triple Threads...

Topps made use of this idea in 08'09 Bowman, but they did not over do it like Panini is doing!

and another nice triple patch card...look how colorful (not only the patches) but the card itself is. They incorporate each player's team logo.

I loved triple threads, only have a few singles, mostly in my Farmar PC.. The SPGU triple patches a lot. nice design..

team & college logos were nice when they first were released. I thought they were so cool. even thought about trying to chase one of the lower end sets for that reason, but now they are in just about every product.. The team/name jersey/patches are ok, but please.. Panini.. keep them limited to 1-2 products... Try something new that we haven't seen before.. The logoman in Elite Black Box
passing the tourch" killed it for me. They should of limited the non-auto ones to /25.. not /99. that would make more sense.. I love the design & the thickness of the card.. but they are not going to have a very good SV. the auto ones will sell for a pretty penny..
