Interesting topps history - 011873 - 04-10-2011 12:25 PM For those who haven't heard: originally, 1952 topps was only supposed to be three series, but they were so successful that they decided to do a fourth (now known as "high numbers"). That series bombed because baseball season was basically over and topps was left with hundreds of cases . For years they tried selling them for literally next to nothing. No one wanted them, so to clear space, they loaded up a barge and dumped them in the ocean. Had the original series been moderately successfull, the hobby never would have had the mantle.
