Interesting topps history - 011873 - 04-10-2011 12:25 PM

For those who haven't heard:

originally, 1952 topps was only supposed to be three series, but they were so successful that they decided to do a fourth (now known as "high numbers").

That series bombed because baseball season was basically over and topps was left with hundreds of cases . For years they tried selling them for literally next to nothing. No one wanted them, so to clear space, they loaded up a barge and dumped them in the ocean.

Had the original series been moderately successfull, the hobby never would have had the mantle.

Here's another

The original paintings for 1953 cards were found in the topps dumpster, all wrapped up nearly in a box.
