remember when inserts were the S**T
I JUST WENT THROUGH SOME OF MY BINDERS AND I WAS LOOKING AT MY GRETZKY INSERTS AND I CAME ACROSS THIS CARD FROM TOPPS THAT I REMEMBER SPENDING ALL MY B-DAY MONEY ON, I REMEMBER SPENDING $50 ON THAT CARD AND I LOOKED IT UP NOW IT'S WORTH $4 WHAT A CROCK. I REMEMBER INSERTS WERE THE COOLEST THING ATLEAST WHEN I WAS COLLECTING. WHAT HAPPENED????

What makes you think they're not cool? And since when does beckett count as the authority on what a card is 'worth'?

I have a pretty stupendous insert collection from the 90's, and I love 'em.. it's almost the only thing I collect.

RE: remember when inserts were the S**T
It is all about the collector. I have really started to see how much fun it is to collect the old Roy inserts from 90's. I will trade any GU or AU cards I have for them.

I also collect Roy BTP cards though as I just love those sets.

So I don't think BV will really tell you what the card could be worth...as it says it is only a guide.

RE: remember when inserts were the S**T
They certainley demand the attentin of days gone by but that being said, I see less set collectors as the hobby has changed - so many cool cards of a certain player... Heck, look at how many RC's are produced of any given player. Even the scrubs can often have 20 different RC's.

What we do see though is the player collector dipping into the individual inserts as some of the inserts are still very well designed.

Value wise - you are right, they have dropped like rocks from a tall building but it is my hope you bought it at the time because it was something you wanted because ti was a great card. Now-a-days, we have binders of inserts for 50 cents and we are refilling those binders every week. I know, someone will be saying why would anyone sell $4/5/6 inserts for 50 cents??? Simple - it keeps people coming back to the store (and the hobby) - and the true value of the hobby (in my eyes) is not just the cards you collect; it includes the friends you make.

I can also assure you that some of those $50 inserts from Pacific in the late 90's and early 2000's that are not seeing love in the prce guide still can demand some good coin on the internet sales sites...

Stadium Sports Cards (since 1989)

Not just Pacific, but lots of 90's UD/Pinnacle stuff with limited print runs demand huge coin.. I think many of us have seen the value of 97-98 Totally Certified Platinum Gold and Mirror Platinum Gold, and 98-99 UD Choice StarQuest Gold go skyrocketing.. it's like you can't touch any of those cards for less than $100.

I think set builders for today's sets have probably dwindled, but I think there are still many people that set build from older sets.. or sets that are actually possible to set build. I do it with UPD YG and SP FW every year

If you have a ton of inserts that you let go of for $.50, I'm gonna PM you now.. maybe you can help me with some on my wantlist

RE: remember when inserts were the S**T
it happens but late 90's inserts are crazy

even a few crazy "rare" early 90's ones are pretty tough to find

using tracking numbers (all US and some Can)

RE: remember when inserts were the S**T
They are still unreal I love chasing the old inserts I need, still trying to finish off many of them for my collection. Do not rely on Beckett I keep seeing them listed in Beckett for $5 or whatever then I see one on ebay thinking I can grab it cheap.... WRONG! Sometimes they go for 3 x Beckett because they are getting harder to find.

RE: remember when inserts were the S**T
I would spend a LOT of money to get my hands on even the least expensive half of Phil's collection. Unfortunately the idea of inserts being cool and valuable dies with overproduction and in advent of jersey/patch cards, autographed cards/etc. There's only so much room in the hobby and when a new type of product comes in and is popular, it affects the value of what came before. People want what's new and exciting, and that goes for anything, not just cards. Couple that with the fact that most inserts are available in large quantity just about everywhere and you have a low "value".

At the same time, Beckett is just a reporter and can be irrelevant a lot of the time.

-Collecting: Steve Kelly, Barry Brust, Danny Watkins, Justin Schultz
Smyl, Linden, Naslund, McLean, Lidstrom RCs
Canucks O-Pee-Chee & OPC Premier cards
