Ok, i sent in 24 cards to get graded, and a few of them go way lower that i thought they would and i need some clarification as to how they get their totals:

Centering Grade : 7.0
Corner Grade : 9.0
Edges Grade : 9.0
Surfaces Grade : 9.5
Autograph Grade : 0.0
Final Grade : 7.5

In the above example, doesn't this avg out to an 8.5? if not, why?

Centering Grade : 8.0
Corner Grade : 9.5
Edges Grade : 9.5
Surfaces Grade : 9.0
Autograph Grade : 0.0
Final Grade : 8.5

In the above example, doesn't this avg out to be a 9? if not, why?

Because it's not an average of the four grades.

I was just told else where about the .5 over lowest subgrade rule... STUPID

An avg grade is an avg grade. If it comes out to 8.6, and the are only give a 7.5 because it happened to get a 7, that doesn't seem very smart to me. So based on this, if the centering got a 5, and all the rest were 9.5 or even 10, i would still get a 5.5 grade?

They do not average the grades out. They use an algorithm to calculate the grade, in addition to the fact that the final grade cannot be more than .5 higher than lowest grade. In some instances you might get a point higher if the lowest grade is on surface or edges since those are weighted lower. Centering and corners are weighted heavier.

It's not stupid, it's math - just not an average.

To point out if your card was 10 centering, 10 corners, 10 edges, but 4 on the surface, it does NOT deserve an 8.5 final grade at all.

It would be nice if they disclose the algorithm they use, I've looked all over and can't find it.

Proprietary is just a definition of ownership. BGS can still let the public know, it would likely put to the rest some of the inconsistency issues a lot of people complain about.

At least BGS offers subgrades, unlike PSA.

Ummm, think you are missing the point. What's the point in offering sub grades if your customers are not privy to how you derive the final grade.
