online price guide changes / promises
can't really say I'm impressed with how the new site / price changes / grandfathering old price for 10 months went through but there is an issue I think should be addressed and I think I know of a decent solution.
problem: the people who cancelled their subscriptions in the last couple of months waiting on the new site got totally shafted on the "reward" we seem to have got of the old price till end of year. as a solution to that, why not extend that grandfathering of price to anyone who has been a subscriber in the past 3-4 months. give maybe 2-3 weeks for a person to renew their subscription and so long as they had been a subscriber in the past 3-4 months they get the same 10 months of old price as the others. as for the "reward" for those who stuck with beckett, still wondering what that is or if the pricing we already paid is it? RE: online price guide changes / promises
That sounds like a compromise that might fly, but I wouldn't hold my breath. If you consider that the site owners, 1) believe that introducing a new price (50% above the old price) while the site is still experiencing downtime is a good idea and, 2) believe that an adequate "thank you" to their loyal customers is a delay in raising the price and finally, 3) did not give any forethought or consideration to those of us that were doing just as you say, waiting for the new launch to re-subscribe.

Also worth mentioning that many members were complaining that they COULDN"T renew OPG's the last couple of weeks of the beta site. The site wouldn't let them complete the renewal. Always looking for: Ozzie Smith/Stan Musial/Lou Brock/STL Cardinals, NFL-CAR/GB/NE and NASCAR-Jimmie Johnson/Mark Martin

RE: online price guide changes / promises
^^ more good points as to reasons there should be a consideration to extend the period of time of being a member to umbrella those who go back a couple months also as well as those who are still current.
I was teetering on canceling mine before i read that message/announcement. glad I decided to keep it but I could have just as easily been one who got left behind because i was getting poor service and didn't want to pay for that poor service (which is totally understandable) it would only be fair. not sure how much ideas from the forums will be weighted in any decision making process, but if you have been a subscriber in the past few months but canceled due to the poor service/waiting for the new site, speak up and point it out, can't hurt Jonny Venters - Super Collector Overall Collection (107/154 70% Complete) base/parallels (83/83 100%) 1/1's (24/71 34%) PC & Trade items attn: finders fee for any non-ebay 1/1 Venters we are able to acquire also interested in 08/10 #'d refractors |

RE: online price guide changes / promises
in defense of IT guys and what they said as for testin and the site bein down to insure it works properly.... there are plenty of things you can't fully test and prepare for until its go time... I spent many years in that field of work and as much as you plan for best and worst case scenario until you really get a full time load bearing down on things and get the gears turning... you can't fully prepare 100% and assume you will have no problems
I believe the mods and IT guy(s) are doing as good a job as they can be with the tools and information given to them. outside of that it is basically becketts ball as to deal with the rest of it. annoying, but as with anything there is no "perfect fix and solution" to seamlessly go from old to new without a bunch of bumps in the road. at least we have active people working on said problems. also not sure how to link a thread here but this is the exact post quoted in the top i was referring to and a thread about the same issue, however this one i just posted up a solution to help with one minor problem i noticed" http://www.beckett.com/forums/thread-1423407.html (if this link doesn't work look for the thread titled "any word on this" Jonny Venters - Super Collector Overall Collection (107/154 70% Complete) base/parallels (83/83 100%) 1/1's (24/71 34%) PC & Trade items attn: finders fee for any non-ebay 1/1 Venters we are able to acquire also interested in 08/10 #'d refractors |

IT doesnt have a clue huh? you must be one of those closet programmers that sprang out of the woodwork in the last 7 days. if you have a clue, email them fixes, or are you just as clueless? Collecting sports cards is a fairly "geeky" hobby, if you're over the age of 12. You really think it's that unlikely that there are a lot of IT professionals on the site? I'm not quite sure why you'd attack a fellow board member who expects the site to work. Right now, I pay about $25 per month for access. If they want my help, they can feel free to pay my consulting fee and we can talk. They're not even offering free extensions for all the down time in the last few weeks, why should we offer anything for free? And for those saying there's no way to test everything, that's true, but there are a lot of ways to test most things. How many times has ebay been mostly unusable for a week after an upgrade? Amazon? Espn? If an upgrade doesn't work, you back out while you fix what's broken, usually. I'm surprised there wasn't at least a beta period where a smaller group of users were migrated to the new site to verify everything worked before moving everybody. |

I've been on ebay since 1998, only seen upgrades/patches in my time. maybe it was prior to 98? I am surprised that they didnt do the testing with selected users as well. the did it with the last version. I was invited to test it but declined. collecting anything and everything PACKERS link to my bucket http://travel.webshots.com/album/579755589YOSjdL |

Ebay has changed significantly since 1998, as have most major sites. Most of these types of sites are database driven. They've upgraded versions of databases since 1998. Have they changed the actual structure of the database tables? That's something that should be pretty transparent to the end user. Did they change the structure of the tables here? Maybe, but again the end user shouldn't know or care. I know they rewrote the site for open source services now, so that in itself should help right from the start. From the way it sounds, they were migrating all the data right before turning on the new site. It took a number of days to migrate all the data. That sure makes it sound like the new site was never even tested with a full data set before it was put in production. |

Yeah, I work in IT, and this is without a doubt the worst "upgrade" execution I have ever been witness to. We're testing a live pay site, and hit with a price increase on top of that. So go ahead and defend them, right? Trade for NY Giants or HOF/legend/superstar.
