OK. I need the gamers of this groups help. My son wants an X-Box for his birthday. All of his friends have X-Box live and play Halo 3 against/with each other. What system do I need to get? There are several different versions of X-Box these days. I am hearing X-Box 360. Also, how does one hook up to the internet? Do you have to connect through a phone line or do these systems come with a wireless card and can pick up on my wireless network?

Where is the best place to buy the unit? I am leery about eBay as I don't want to have an issue with the unit and have no place to take it back. I also don't think I want a reconditioned or used unit. Who knows what might have happened to the unit.

He is 14 years old, so what games besides Halo 3 would you recommend? (As much fun as it looks, no Grand Theft Auto for him. His mom would kill me!).

If I ever bought an XBox 360 it would be through Wallymart. I'm still waiting for the time that I can build my "man-hut" in the back lot. An Xbox/Playstation will defintely be one of the things I will have in the hobby-hut. Smile Check out gamespot to see which are the "hot" games. I usually lean towards sports and driving games.

I had some dissappointing news last night as we found out that our Housesitter couldn't make it out next week. Arrrrrggggghhhhh. We are supposed to leave for our vacation on Tuesday and we have to find a replacement asap. sigh. That's the second house/petsitter to drop out on us in the last month. I must have done something horrible in my past life....

Wayne,

To play Halo 3, you'll need to buy the XBox 360. I would expect that by now all the systems on the shelf come with the new chipset/cooling system. Which in your case is good as it's supposed to alleviate the "Red Ring of Death" issues the systems had before now. I have one of the newer systems and have yet to have any issues.

As for the XBox live, you'll need to buy a wireless adapter or use the built in adapter for a wired connection. The wireless adapter is another $100 in itself, however a wired connection will give you a faster and more reliable connection as well as much less to configure. I don't play my 360 online as I think paying for one online game(WoW) is enough for me right now.

As for games, it will depend on his interest and your parental controls, which as you have said already GTA4 is out. I'm more of a sports gamer on consoles, so I've got hockey and baseball, but the new MLB baseball is ok, nothing real special. I'm a big fan of racing games, except nascar(it bores me to no end). Forza Motorsport 2 is a great one that is a racing simulation. It's not much help in the way of game suggestions but it really depends on his preference and then what you'll allow. I'd go with his genre preferences and then check out IGN.com, and look for the 360 reviews. While I don't always agree with what they say, it's a pretty good representation of how good or bad a game is.

I picked up my 360 from Best Buy as there was a Manager's Sale on the limited Halo 3 edition. You can buy it of course from any big retailer but I don't think all stores offer extended warranty plans, you may want to call ahead or ask in store about that.

Hope that helps a little.

Picked up a box of Jumbo Series Two Topps during my lunch-walk - my dealer also handed off a pile of loose cards that a previous buyer left behind - series two UD and Topps stuff - I'll be grouping them all up and mailing em out in the coming days....

What's the story with the Gold foil Topps? They're not numbered -- are they 'special' or are they 'SPECIAL'?

Included in the loose cards was a Franklin D. Roosevelt v. Wendell Willkie card (1940 campaign) Woo-hoo! I'm gettin' me some history learnin'!

Apparently, I'm also going to Topps Town! Double Woo-hoo! I hope they let me out after I enter....

He also sold me a Bowman Signs of the Future box topper - do we have a Giants collector? It's pitcher Brian "Good Vibrations" Wilson! (too easy.)

I'll keep you all posted on any big hits - (one auto and two relics per jumbo box).

Okay - four packs into it, and here are my observations:
4 Presidential campaign cards (1796 Adams v Jefferson "Steel Cage", 1860 Lincoln!, 1868 U.S. Grant, 1936 Roosevelt)
3 Topps Town cards
Manager cards a plenty
Classic Combo cards (Pujols & Fielder)
Home Run Derby contest /999 (Jason Bay - "If He Wins, I win!" - not likely...)
3 more invites to Topps Town
and
Red Hot Rookie redemption #10 card

and a nice Alex Gordon GU....

CONTEST: Without using Google (or anything else) name for me the Democratic candidate who lost to Honest Abe in 1860 and I'll send you the card!

Good MAENING everyone...

Just wanted to stop in and say Hi. I'm feeling better about my Twins after taking the last two from the Yankees. To start off June, I have updated my contest page. 243 cards left to go until 8,000. The top three points leaders are:

Red Sox (Wayne) - 105
Cardinals (Thom) - 88
White Sox (Tony C) - 88

I did receive three packages yesterday, one each from Jason B, Dan Weam and Travis. I have not had time to look through them yet, but I will open them tonight and post the proper thanks.

Hope your day is going well. Talk with you all later.
