I recently went to Fedex/Kinkos to ship 20 cards to BGS for grading. I declared value of $6K so that I would be protected just in case. People at Fedex/Kinkos stated it didn't matter what amount I've declared for the shipment value. I won't be reimbursed for more than $50 if Fedex lost the shipment since it was sportscard. So, questions for everyone is which shipping company do you use to ship high value cards to be graded ? Thanks.
FedEx has some weird rules on what qualifies for insurance. I always use USPS, but the most coverage you can get with them is $5,000 per package (never been a problem for me!). Maybe you could split up more valuable submissions into two packages so each package has maximum coverage. I usually send Priority Mail, Insured with Signature Confirmation. Never had a problem with 20+ submissions (knock on wood).
C'ya!

This information is not entirely correct. True, USPS basic insurance only allows up to $5k but USPS registered mail can have an insured value up to $25k. If my old calculations are correct it would be cheaper to ship registered once you get into the $1500 value range and your package is also a hell of a lot more secure. The thing will get signed for every step of the way so it may take several extra days to get to its destination. It is probably also easier to deal with insurance claim for loss of registered mail in the extremely rare event it happens. Short of armored vehicle, USPS registered mail is about as safe and secure as it gets. The price is pretty good too when you are sending four figure valued packages.
Thanks jt65, I didn't know that! Of course I don't have the type of cards that would go for that kind of money anyway, but it will help others I'm sure.
Thanks jt65. It looks like I will be using the USPS Registered Mail.

I'm looking at the Beckett form, and I notice it says shipping options is FedEx only. Therefore you can use other shipping methods right like UPS, USPS or DHL ???
First off, you are not covered for the package you sent. FedEx does not cover sports cards over $100 for FedEx Ground and $500 regular FedEx(anything other than ground). I don't have the exact area it is located in since I have not looked at the book in a while, but cards fall under art and collectibles.
Now, as far as getting them back from Beckett, if they are valued at over $3000, Beckett automatically ships USPS. This is information located on the print forms you can get looking at the grading area. As far as orders valued less than $3000, they generally come FedEx and no matter how much you claim, you will only be reimbursed the going rate for those cards. If the cards have a going rate of $1200, you claim $1500, and something were to happen to the cards coming back to you, you will only receive $1200 for them. If they have a going rate of $1200, and you claim $1000, you will only get $1000 if something were to happen.
Keep these things in mind when you ship. When I ship my cards to Beckett directly for grading, my insurance covers them, so I ship FedEx since they have the best tracking and the best shipping rates for the time the travel there.
USPS, however my biggest orders are less than 10 cards. So not quite the same as the rest of you guys.
