What We Say

SPA always has been one of those products that breaks on either end of the spectrum. Almost invariably, a collector walks away thinking he just busted one of the best boxes ever…or else he’s looking around for someone who can give a decent description of the truck that just crushed his dreams. If you’ve taken a close look at our pulls, you probably have a good idea which way this particular sample swung.

On the plus side was the near-completion of the 100-card short set, which featured a pleasant design, and the fact that all the autograph cards were hard-signed. The dual autograph of Salming and Lidstrom was an especially nice pairing that should make for a popular card on the secondary market.

On the other hand, the players featured on our pulls generated little buzz in the room. This may have been the fifth consecutive SPA box we’ve busted that’s yielded a Dustin Brown SOTT. Finding just two RCs in the box was a disappointment, but the fact that both players are likely to find their greatest success outside the NHL sealed the deal. On a side note, no sign of any "Wave 2" carryovers from 2005-06 SPA. Not sure if those were supposed to be present in every box or not, but we came up empty-handed.

Was this box typical or had our luck just run dry? We’ll find out soon enough as we feature another SP Authentic bust in our next video box break.--AM
