Recently purchased this card... (amazing condition, in my opinion) especially for 1998 SPx, well known for chipping and horrific edges.

I messaged a collector who does ample business with BGS in regards to getting cards graded and here is his response...

"The problem with that card is every time I have ever submitted a nice
one with half way descent edges that I purchase it comes back
unserviceable as they always come up with a reason as to why it might
be doctored. The ones they graded in the old days high is before they
knew any better and now they pretty much won't grade that card anymore unless it is 8.0 quality at best.
Nice card but my personal opinion in regards to experience is that no
chipping means only negative. It is hard to believe the card came out
of a pack that clean unless it was a factory replacement but those are
usually hand numbered. I can almost tell you that there is a good
chance beckett will find a reason not to grade it because it is to
clean but PSA is usually more generous as long as the card measures
accordingly."

Thoughts/opinions? I took it out of the case once after buying it, just to give it a closer and thorough detailed look... can't find anything wrong with it ((in regards to being trimmed, altered, doctored, etc.))

The original owner claims over and over again that he pulled the card from a pack in 1998.

*** IS IT TRUE THAT BGS WILL MORE THAN LIKELY DESIGNATE THE CARD UNSERVICEABLE ??? ***
anyone with knowledge on the SPx?
I was a huge fan of the baseball version of SPx Finite that year so I can somewhat relate to what you're talking about in regards to condition. I do find it kind of strange that they would almost automatically say a card was possibly altered, especially with the way those cards are. I would think it would be very easy to see if someone altered it as it's not your normal cardboard stock on there and has that weird shiny effect on the front.

I would try to get in touch with someone at BGS to ask for some more detail behind this and maybe what they look for on this card, especially when it comes in a higher grade. I think Mark Anderson is the head of BGS, maybe he could help? I have no idea what his email is though but maybe someone with BGS could chime in here to help the OP out?
