1.centering 2.edges 3.corners 4. surface.

Just so you don't get our friend beckettdah there confused,,,,,,
Every issue has known qualities that are looked at,,,, notes are made & the database built up around what they see in the grading room,,,,,,, after a while an algorithm may be tweaked based on whats found,,,,
If your looking for just a few things to concentrate on ANY card with any grading company,,,,, corners and centering are where its at,,,,
Both are the two most noticeable "eye appeal" detractors and minor discrepancy's in either one generally affect the appeal of the card itself,,,,
On ebay you will find cheap "jewelers loupe" items,,,, buy one,,, use it to look at corners,,,,,
Centering you should be able to eyeball it,,,,,, if you can't tell centering from looking than get a bunch of card issues where centering is VERY noticable,,,,, say a Topps/Fleer/Donruss 1990's issue where they have defined pics inside a bordered card,,,,,, ebay has TONS of cards where the centering may vary from a near mint 8 up thru perfect,,,,, spend time viewing some if you still can't tell after say a month see me I'll put together a montage of pictures of centering in the different grading levels,,,,
Hope some of this info helps---

What about the back? If the front of the card is perfect, but the back is off-centered, how much does the back affect the grade?

I have several cards centered perfectly on front but they are off center on the back and wound up with poor centering subs (like 7.5 or 8.0). So having a perfect front centering is not going to help if the back is way off.
