Hey everyone. I've been checking out some of the scans posted here and I must say that this is great. I've started my vintage Phillies collection a few weeks ago and hope to get my scanner working with my laptop to post my collection. Its around 45 cards with most of them being from '59. Not too big but its a start. I want to add some of the vintage stars also. After years wasted chasing down the next big player I've finally come to my senses. About 3 weeks ago I sat in my LCS talking with the owner ticked off about box/pack/player prices and he said why don't I start a vintage collection. Best advice I could have gotten. All of my collection so far is graded from PSA but after looking at some amazing collections here I may start getting a mix of graded and raw. I can't afford that PSA 7 Mantle but I may be able to get a vg raw version.

Thanks to everyone who offered advice on a post I did about getting started. I must also thank Beckett for giving us our own little world. I hope to be a regular here.

Mike
Welcome to the vintage world. As far as collecting vintage goes everyone has to start somewhere. I started with just one and it grew from there. post your scans some time we would love to see them.
Welcome to the dark side!

Unless you plan on pursuing a high grade vintage collection, don't worry about what a graded label says. Always just pay within your means and most importantly, what you are willing to pay and won't have regrets about it later. I've got a few cards that I've loved for a long time that have great eye appeal but aren't in "tip top" shape. I paid a fair price for each and am very happy with them.

I recommend only purchasing graded (SGC/PSA/BVG) online until you are comfortable enough with an issue/dealer to purchase raw. There are lots of clowns on ebay who pull the old "I found this rare '33 Goudey Ruth in my grandpa's attic when he died!". Yet, when you look at the auctions that he recently won, he purchased a reprint a week earlier.

Always do your research. It is really fun and you'll come across plenty that you've never even known about before. There are some great people on here that are into vintage and are more than willing to help you out with any questions you may have.
Welcome to this exclusive club, while some people pay hundreds of dollars for unproven players, auto, and game used. There are a select few that can appreciate where cards came from. And when the game of baseball was at its best, or any sport for that matter. I have just recently started collecting vintage as well, and have amassed a good amount in a short amount of time.

For me its being able to say look I have a Ted Williams that no one else has. To me condition is not all what its cracked up to be. While it is nice to have a good condition card, some of the bad condition cards can still be worth a lot. I think about I have a card thats 50 or 60 years old and if I hold on to it until I die and pass it on to my son or grandson, how great would that be that a card survives that long. And how many will still be around then.

I have a nice shipment coming in this week, at least its supposed to. I know I bought a boxed set cant remember what year. But I know it had a lot of duplicates with it. When they come in there will be plenty of scans. And I will throw a couple your way free of charge. Just as a welcome kit to this club.
Welcome aboard, I'm sure you'll find that this side is much more rewarding.

That is what my vintage collection means to me. I was fortunate to start collecting vintage early in my card collecting days and have always had more of a connection with them than any of my modern cards.

Welcome to the vintage world. I would love to see scans of the cards that you have
Glad there is a new member in the club. That is a nice way to start with your favorite team. Then, it will be picking a few star players, and will follow grabin a lot of cards from certain year. That will give you the urge to finish the set, and then will start the quest to make a set from another year and so on. It is really a great addiction. At least that is my situation.
Thanks everyone for the comments and info. Working right now getting my scanner hooked up so I hope to post pics soon. I'm also looking for a place to buy some raw vintage cards besides my LCS. He can be very pricey. Been looking at the Bay but after reading about trimmed, fake, etc cards I'm a little hesitant so I figured I'll stick with graded for now. Can anyone point me in the right direction with someone they have dealt with and trust? Again, thanks for the comments.

Welcome aboard! I look forward to seeing some scans of your collection! I too am one of those people that "converted" a few years ago. I used to dabble, but now I'm obsessed... Smile
