PS3 Game Review: EYE of JUDGMENT
By Doug Kale
Rated: T for Teen
This game has been one of the most talked about PS3 games of the year. Ever since I heard about this game about six months ago I've been so anxious to play it. Okay. So, the question is, does this game live up to all of the hype? Let's find out:
1)Game Construction: The game requires a little bit of a hands-on set up. You have to construct the tower that holds the PlayStation camera "eye" and then line up the field squares on the provided playmat using grid lines that show up on your TV screen. It's important for the trading cards used in the game to be played inside each square for the game to work properly. Once you get it set up, everything else is quite easy.
2)Play Options: You have three options to play Eye of Judgment: Player vs. Computer, Computer vs. Computer or Player vs. Player. Since I was testing this game out by myself I used the Player vs. Computer mode. I have to say, the computer is definitely tough to beat, making this game a real challenge for anyone.
3)Graphics: The 3-D graphics for this game are incredible. When you place your trading card down on the playing field to duel, your creature comes to life in 3-D and battles another creature next to it. The battle scenes are also amazing!
4)Sound: Great sound effects when you bring out different creatures onto the field. The sounds of the weapons used in every battle were also excellent.
5)Playability: The game plays smoothly as long as you have the cards lined up in the squares on the playmat. There are lots of strategies in the game. One thing to remember is that when you select a card to go into this 3-D battle for you, pick one that will attack in the right direction of your opponent and future opponents on the field. This is a key piece of strategy. The statistics for every card (which there are many) and every move used in the game is tracked by the computer. This was also important when pondering your next move.
Summary: This game uses a variety of attributes found in other games such as Magic The Gathering (mana and gold-silver-white rarity symbols), Yu-Gi-Oh! TV series (2-D cards brought into a 3-D world on the playing field), Pokemon Trading Cards Game (HP=Hit Points) and the creature's races are similar to those found in both Magic and Yu-Gi-Oh! The gameplay was a great deal of fun and kept my interest up. After playing Player vs. Computer I felt like I was ready to take on another player. Having played all of the trading card games I mentioned earlier, I truly enjoyed this game a lot and can see how this could become something really big if enough people know about it. I was impressed by the graphics, gameplay and play options. I would definitely recommend the game to all PS3 players and fans of Trading Card Games. Each Eye of Judgment game box comes with a starter deck and one card booster pack. However, you can now purchase additional boosters wherever the game is sold. Using new cards that are released on a regular basis could definitely help the game grow.
My Score: 9 out of 10
