Broadway Brett: Favre's Stuff Movin' On Up
Aug 7 2008 1:37PM
Take one of the most beloved NFL superstars of all time from the Frozen Tundra to the Big Apple and what do you get? A recipe for hobby hysteria.
While Brett Favre may not be the ideal option at quarterback for the New York Jets, he's definitely the best option they have for now. Chad Pennington's arm is all but gone and the untested Kellen Clemens has shown no signs that he's capable of comfortably handling the New York media, much less AFC East defenses.
Regardless of what happens on the field this season, there's likely not a hotter player in all of football cards right now than Favre.
"Look for Favre's cards to receive immediate interest now that he's the quarterback in one of football's top markets," says Beckett Senior Market Analyst Keith Hower, a longtime Jets fan. "But don't expect a big value increase until his first Jets cards hit the market.
For Topps, that looks to be as soon as two weeks from now when the company releases its Topps Mini Team Sets, says spokesman Clay Luraschi. Donruss' Scott Prusha says his company is hoping to get some quality Favre photographs in the Jets' preseason game tonight and will likely have more details tomorrow.

"In comparison, when Michael Jordan made his comeback in 2001 with the Washington Wizards, his base cards were bringing between $10 and $25 per. Look for Favre's base Jets cards to hover in the $10 to $15 range."
As for the long-term ramifications of Favre's darker shade of green, we know that sports fans can be a fickle bunch when it comes to spending money, especially on a guy like Favre, who will always be remembered as Packer.
"He has no Jets history -- yet -- so expect his values to fluctuate with his performance," Hower notes. "Given that the Jets won just four games last year, it's safe to assume that at the very least, Favre values will be stable throughout the 2008 season." |
