The "Holy Grail" of baseball cards: The T206 Honus Wagner, graded 1 POOR by BVG, encountered a flurry of activity when Robert Edwards Auctions launched its 2008 online and catalog auction today.

Within hours of the Wagner's initial $50,000 opening bid, the card had already drawn the attention of 13 bids, driving the current asking price beyond $120,000 and early pre-sale estimates.

According to Beckett Select Auctions manager Dave Sliepka, a Wagner of similar ilk established a new sales record for a Poor condition sale when a PSA 1 was sold at last year's National Sports Collectors Convention in Cleveland, OH., for $170,000.

"This BVG 1 example has a legitimate chance to eclipse the benchmark that was established last year," Sliepka said.

The Wagner card was found in the recently discovered "Beckett T206" find. The entire collection, which comprised of 546 newly-discovered T206 cards, will be offered through REA's catalog and internet auction and overseen by the Beckett Select Auctions, a division of Beckett Media.

The action is scheduled to culminate May 3, 2008.
