Rare Topps Favre Variations Discovered

Jul 28 2008 12:19PM

Two rare 2008 Topps Brett Favre variations have collectors scratching their heads. Favre is on card #34 in the base set, and is pictured ready to take a shotgun snap. One of the variations, listed as #34B in the Price Guide, features a ghosted image of Vince Lombardi's face above Favre's left shoulder.

The second variations pictures Favre in a Packers helmet riding a lawnmower. This is listed as card #34C in the PG. The tractor card has sold for slightly less than $100, but the Lombardi card has brought in sales of $125 and $355.

"We thought it would be cool to pay tribute to Favre as a legendary Packer and the fact that he was retiring—at least we thought he was—as one of the all-time great Packers," said Topps spokesman Clay Luraschi. "Packers fans see Favre as a legend, hence the Lombardi face card. And Favre is not going into retirement quietly, hence him driving a tractor with his helmet on."

Luraschi also shared that the odds of pulling one of these cards is 1:12,000 packs. In other words, you would have to bust more than 300 boxes of 2008 Topps to hit the odds for these rare cards.
