Simply having the day off work is reason enough for most Americans to celebrate the Fourth of July. For one collector, though, the holiday was particularly memorable...and not because of the picnics and parades.
Mike Fruitman, owner of Mike's Stadium Sportscards in Aurora, Colo., explains.
"On the Fourth we offered our customers the chance to win free product equal to the amount that they had spent," he said. "We've done this twice in the past and the biggest prize we had to give away was $40. This year, someone went big at the counter. And wouldn't you know, he hit big...to the tune of more than $1,300 in free cards."
Fruitman says that collectors are allowed to pick from one of 36 eggs in a box after making their purchase. One of the 36 held a message reading "Happy 4th." And that's the egg pulled by a collector identified as Gabe, moments after he had dropped $1,358 at Fruitman's counter.
"Imagine my surprise when Gabe pulled the big winner prize and I had to pony up $1,358 in free product," Frutiman said. "We've had several $1,000 drawings in the past, but this is our biggest single giveaway ever."
Fruitman taped the event and posted it on youtube. "Wait until you see the gem he pulled from his Absolute box," Fruitman says.
