Deckspert Q&A

Well, Andy, that’s a tough one. I probably would have to say that the uber theme of Onslaught block was my favorite. I love tribal. Choosing your color or colors is one of the first exciting parts of Magic, and being able to select another differentiator is pretty cool. I may be a red mage, but do I want to use goblins, dragons, or beasts to do my bidding? Tribal also has an old-school, smash-mouth style to it. Beyond the spell-slinging, Magic is also about creatures slugging it out on the battlefield. I remember the first time that my tattered, circa-1995 goblin deck slammed into a White Weenie mob of creatures. Little men with banding were carving up my green-guy squad, until the Goblin Grenades and Songs of Blood started to cook. That was some fun!

Back to your question, our creative team behind the game is awesome, and they have been loading our game with flavor and exploring new creature types with each set. What tribal will mean in five or 10 years? Who knows? Will Magic’s iconic creatures be the same? What would tribal look like on Mirrodin, Kamigawa, or Ravnica? I don’t know, but I’ll be excited to see tribal come back someday.
