Completed Digital Ad Specifications
Document Set-up
- The finished ad should be set up or placed in Quark, not in Illustrator or Photoshop. Any other application is not considered a “ready-for-output” or CTP ad.
- If you are creating the ad in Illustrator, rasterize the entire file in Photoshop before you place it into Quark.
- When building an ad which includes a bleed, the document set-up must be 8”x10.75”, then pull the 1/8” bleed beyond the edge of the template.
- Include laser copies or color proofs with ALL ads. It’s the only way we can make sure your ad prints as you have intended. We are unable to guarantee the accuracy of your output if you do not send along a color laser proof.
- Make sure you’ve included all placed art (TIFFs, EPS files, etc.) with your job.
- ALL images should be 300 DPI at a minimum.
- Make sure all graphics have been sized down in the original application and not in Quark. Make sure ALL images placed at 100% in your Quark document.
- If you are saving as an EPS file out of Photoshop, do not select the JPEG “Encoding” option; use Binary(This is on the second line of the Save box).
- Update your file. Are all of your imported images updated? A modifed image might not update as you planned and can sometimes be overlooked if it’s tucked away in a corner of your document. If extensive, we may charge you for this task. It takes time to update, show and replace artwork.

Fonts Usage:
- Make sure you have included all screen and printer fonts. Please outline all fonts if possible. We do not accept True Type fonts. All True Type fonts must be converted to outlines in your application.
- QuarkXPress has “Collect-for-Output...” which copies your file and linked graphics into a new or existing folder. However, this function does not automatically gather fonts or the original art files, so you will have to gather these manually. There are applications available, such as Flightcheck, that will collect the fonts as well.
Colors
- Convert ALL colors in your document to CMYK. In QuarkXPress, get one of the several shareware or freeware “Convert colors to CMYK” XTensions, available online, or convert your spot colors to process in the “Edit Colors” dialog box in Photoshop.
- Remove ALL unused spot colors from Illustrator files before placing them into Quark. Do this through the Custom Color dialog box, otherwise Illustrator places them into your layout program, even if you did not use them.
